Sherri Tan

Sherri Tan is a figurative artist whose work includes collage, sculpture, photography, books and recently, set design and film. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the US including the Bass Museum of Art, Miami; the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Miami Dade College Galleries, Polk Museum, Dynamo Art Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Art, Pittsburgh; Center for Contemporary Art, VA; Jamaica Arts Center, NY, Rosenwald Gallery, University of Pennsylvania; Collage of the Americas Gallery, Chicago and Gerald Peters Gallery, NY, among others. Bridge Red Studios/Project Space presented  a solo exhibit entitled, Sherri Tan, 1992- 2012: a 20-Year Survey.

Tan's large-scale artworks include stage settings for Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, which toured in the US and Asia; and Supernatural Scenes commissioned by the Frost Opera Theatre. Her large set for opera, Visions of Orpheus, was described by Larry Budmen of the South Florida Classical Review as "... striking scenic design, which mixes painting, photography and sculpture, to form a flexible playing space that spills out into the aisles of the small venue..."

Tan has created art and films for composer Thomas Sleeper's operas "Small Change", "River of Shifting Sands" and for writer Jane Alison's libretto: "The Sisters Antipodes". She has set her work in film to accompany performances by the Greater Miami Youth Orchestra, Bethel College Wind Symphony, and the Benjamin James Duo. Tan's work is in public, private and corporate collections including the Patrick and Beatrice Haggerty Museum of Art; the Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Visual and Concrete Poetry; Jaffe Center for Book Arts; American Bankers Insurance Group; Gerald Peters Galleries, and Miami-Dade Public Library, among others. Sherri Tan has received various awards including a three-year CAVA fellowship from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, Individual Artist grants from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Artist Access grants, and Tigertail Productions awards.

Current projects include a sculptural/collage series entitled "Time and Passion", a series of books called "Songs of Love and Death" and a collaborative film entitled "Projected Memories". Thomas Sleeper, with whom she is collaborating on new films, says "Tan's work juxtaposes original, historic and cultural images in ways that seems to alter our perceptions of both time and space. Her layered allusions refocus and create new meanings. Tan's art, while standing on its own with a visceral and immediate impact, activates the experiences and memories of the viewer allowing or even forcing one to reconsider assumptions about this world." Sherri Tan lives in Miami, Florida.
